New Delhi, 14 Oct. 2020: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has voiced concern over the arrest of octogenarian activist Father Stan Swamy by the National Investigative Agency (NIA).

In a statement to the media, JIH National Secretary for Community and National Affairs, Malik Mohtasim Khan said, “We are highly concerned by the arrest of 83 year old Father Stan Swamy, Jesuit priest and activist – who has been fighting for Adivasi land-rights in Jharkhand since several decades. He has been arrested by the NIA in connection with the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence case and alleged links with Maoists. It appears that he is being punished for his relentless struggle for the Adivasis of Jharkhand, who are relentlessly exploited and deprived of their basic rights by the state and market forces. Father Stan has been a vocal supporter of the Pathalgadi Movement of tribals and written extensively on how big corporations were grabbing tribal land with the connivance of the state for building factories and mines.”

The JIH Secretary has demanded the authorities to release Stan Swamy and allow him to go back to his residence. “Father Stan has cooperated fully with the investigative agencies in the past and there is no need to keep an octogenarian with comorbidities behind bars,” he added.
