JIH Condemns Amarnath Attack

New Delhi, July 11: The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Muhammad Salim Engineer has condemned the Amarnath Yatra attack and urged the government to find and punish the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

In a statement issued by Jamaat the Secretary General said: ‘’we are appalled by the manner in which pilgrims were gunned down while traveling in a bus and we condemn this act unequivocally. We urge the government to find and punish those who carried out this act of violence at the earliest. The government should analyze our security arrangements for the pilgrimage and if any negligence is found the responsible officers and staff should be penalized. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of all the victims and deepest sympathies with the injured. We stand together with them in this hour of grief. We expect that the government will heighten the security measures for enhanced safety of the pilgrims and there will not be any more casualties or incidents during the remaining yatra ’’.

At least seven pilgrims returning from the Amarnath shrine were killed yesterday night in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district after their bus and a security vehicle came under gunfire. The attack occurred at Batengoo when 60-70 pilgrims were returning from Baltal, one of the base camps of the pilgrimage, to Jammu.
