The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind – Engineer Muhammad Salim welcomed the election results in Burma and termed it asa victory of democracy over dictatorship. He congratulated the leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) – Aung San SuuKyi for her splendid victory winning 77% of the seats to the Burmese parliament. He hoped this election victory will pave for a new era of progress and prosperity in Burma and that the military regime will relinquish power and allow SuuKyi to form the next government. Engineer Salim said that: ‘’we hope that after assuming power SuuKyi will look at the issue of the Rohingya Muslims in a sympathetic manner and abide by her commitment to stand up for the rights of minorities for peace, harmony and equality’’. Jamaat mourns the loss of lives in the recent landslide in northern Burma and hopes that the authorities will complete the rescue operations at the earliest and offer support to the families of the deceased.
