jih concern on cbi

New Delhi: The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Muhammad Salim Engineer has expressed concern over the recent events related to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In a statement issued to the media the JIH President said:

‘’ we are highly concerned over the recent developments related to the country’s premier investigative agency the CBI. First there was an open skirmish going on for the last few months between the CBI’s top officers with the CBI Director filing an FIR against his deputy on charges of corruption. The deputy then levelled bribery charges against his superior in more than a dozen cases. Although the government of India has divested both officers of their powers and appointed an interim chief; saying that this overnight dismissal was required for an impartial probe into the matter, the damage that these developments has caused is both embarrassing and irreparable’’.

The Secretary General continued by saying: ‘’Jamaat feels that the first casualty has been the credibility of the nation’s topmost investigative agency. Secondly the way in which the government handled the issue by letting the problem drag on and then arbitrarily dismissed the officers has exposed the government’s weak administrative ability and disregard of standard procedures and consultation process with various stakeholders. Thirdly various appointments and transfers conducted immediately by the interim CBI chief shows that the CBI which was supposed to be an independent agency is completely politicized and follows the instruction of political masters which goes against the basic principle of independent and fair probe into major crimes that take place in our country. We hope that the government takes the necessary steps to restore the dignity and reputation of the CBI, else the country will pay a very heavy price for the government’s mishandling of its leading investigation agency’’.
