Jamaat expresses sorrow at the death of pilgrims near Varanasi

16 Oct – New Delhi: The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Muhammad Salim Engineer expressed sorrow at the death of 24 persons in a stampede on an overcrowded bridge on the outskirts of Varanasi and offered condolences to the relatives of the deceased. The incident took place on the famous Rajghat bridge when a large number of followers of the Jai Gurudev cult, were on their way to a two-day camp at Domri village along the banks of the Ganga.
Salim Engineer appealed to the government to quickly dispense the compensation announced to the kin of who lost their loves and provide free medical care to the injured.The Secretary General – JIH said:” it is highly surprising that the administrative machinery did not have adequate crowd control mechanism in place which resulted in high number of casualties”.
