Jamaat welcomes SC judgment on Right to Privacy

28 Aug, New Delhi: The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Muhammad Salim Engineer has welcomed the recent Supreme Court judgment on the ‘’Right to Privacy’’. In a statement to the media, the JIH Secretary General said: ‘’ We welcome the SC judgment on the right to privacy. The Supreme Court ruling that privacy is intrinsic to freedom of life and personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, is a huge victory for the citizens of India who can now be assured that their personal freedom and choices will be protected by law. Jamaat had raised concerns earlier this year about Aadhaar becoming mandatory. There were fears raised by civil liberty groups that Aadhaar would virtually turn into a mass surveillance system and which could jeopardize the privacy of the individual as the data could be hacked or shared with private entities and business organizations. As this judgment recognizes the right to privacy as an inalienable and fundamental right and which can now only be curtailed by a law which has to pass the test of constitutional validity. We hope this judgment will now help restore the rights of the many which were crushed by the heavy hand of majoritarianism’’.
