Famous Historian Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan speaks at a function in LuLu Masjid Kozhikode after Juma prayers. JIH Kerala Ameer MI Abdul Aziz is seen next to him

Kochi: A strange, unique but pleasant phenomenon is taking place in the state of Kerala which may have far-reaching consequences towards the development of interfaith relations and communal harmony in our country. In the past few months, mosques in Kerala have been opening their doors to other religious communities to witness the Friday sermon and prayer. Most of these mosques are run by people associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami, Kerala. While some observed open day mosques, few others conducted friendly “Jumuas” (Fridays). In the friendly Jumua conducted on 6 March in Masjidul Lulu in Kozhikode, the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami – Kerala, MI Abdul Azeez delivered the Khutba or the Friday Sermon. He said that places of worship should become spaces that unite humanity. Prominent personalities who attended the friendly Jumua include noted historian MGS Narayanan, UK Kumaran, King Samoodiri’s representative Rama Varma, CL Thomas, Dr. Bhatt and Advocate Anoop Narayanan. While addressing the gathering after the Friday prayer, MGS Narayanan stated that he was indeed very lucky to have attended the Jumua. One of the first mosques to conduct an open day mosque was Kochi Grand Masjid in Ernakulam.

On 10 January, two serving judges of Kerala High Court, Justice Alexander Thomas and Justice Devan Ramachandran, some political leaders, Christian priests and Hindu religious leaders participated in the Friday Jumua. Imam MP Faisal delivered the Khutba in which he spoke about the mercy Almighty God bestows upon the world. The guests addressed the gathering after the prayer. This event was widely reported in the print and visual media. In Vadayam Mecca Masjid around 40 non-Muslims participated in the friendly Jumua. The Khutba was delivered by Jamaat-e-Islami’s Kerala Shoora member, T Mohammed Velam. In his sermon he explained that Islam teaches that all human beings originated from the same parents. He further said that Islam calls on its adherents to respect all other faiths. Grand Masjid Ernakulum hosted members of the Sikh community during the Jumua prayer on 28 February. This news was widely covered internationally. In the friendly Jumua organized at Masjidul Irsahdiya, Feroke, the Jamaat-e-Islami Kerala – PR Secretary, Samad Kunnakav delivered the Khutba. Nadapuram Islamic Center Jumua Masjid, Masjidulnoor, Kurudimukku and Edathala Marva Masjid are the other mosques where friendly juma’s were organized.
