New Delhi: The President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Syed Sadatullah Hussaini has condemned the crackdown by the government on anti-CAA protests in the capital and elsewhere in the country.

In a statement issued to the media, the JIH President said, “Jamaat-e-Islami Hind condemns the crackdown on the peaceful protest organized by the citizens of our country in New Delhi and all over India against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The protestors were not allowed to exercise their democratic right of dissent and were detained under the garb of prohibitory orders. Internet and mobile services shut down in various areas of Delhi, metro train services were stopped and various police checkpoints caused huge traffic snarls inconveniencing the public. This high-handedness by the government and the police was uncalled for and exposed the undemocratic nature of the government. We urge the government to rise above petty politics, talk to the students and civil society groups, who are agitating against the CAA & proposed NRC, initiate inquiry against erring police officials, withdraw frivolous cases against innocent students and protestors, and announce immediate compensation to those who were injured by the police atrocities.”

Syed Sadatullah continued: “We condemn in strongest terms the killings of protestors in Mangalore and Lucknow and demand the immediate suspension of respective Police Commissioners and filing of FIRs against guilty officers. We also deplore the detention of protesters including the noted historian Ramchandra Guha in Bengaluru and many others. Jamaat has never condoned violence. It believes in peaceful protests and respecting the law of the land. Peace and respect of law are the responsibility of protesters and the administration and police officials. We urge the government to assess the scale of protests all over the country and realize its folly of coming up with the CAA-NRC-NPR. It is deplorable that the government is playing with such divisive tactics at a time when the nation is confronted with huge challenges like slowing growth, inflation, banking and agrarian crisis. India cannot achieve its developmental goals as an agitated and divided nation”.
