19 Dec, New Delhi: The Supreme Court has recently ordered a ban on the sale of liquor up to a distance of half a kilometer from the state and national highways. The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Muhammad Salim Engineer while welcoming the decision said that: ”This decision by the Supreme Court bench presided by Chief Justice of India Justice T.S.Thakur is in the best interests of people and should be highly appreciated”. He said that: ” Islam has always looked at alcohol as the ‘mother of all evils’. Alcohol not only harms the one who consumes it but also destroys his family and weakens the society”.

We welcome the ban on liquor on highways and demand complete prohibition throughout the country: Secretary General JIH

The Secretary General JIH said that: ” according to the NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau) more than 150,000 people die and three times as much get injured on highways every year due to alcohol consumption. We hope that this Supreme Court verdict will help reduce the number of deaths that occur on highways due to drunken driving. We appreciate the decision to remove the hoardings advertising liquor from highways and non-renewal of licenses of shops selling alcohol. We demand that the government regulate and reduce liquor and alcohol advertisements because the younger generation is getting negatively influenced by them and is causing social problems in society. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has always been demanding complete prohibition throughout the country. Prohibition is also recommended by the Constitution of India, in Article 44 under the Directive Principles. We appreciate the prohibition in Bihar and feel that it should be replicated by other states. If the Central and State governments implement total prohibition, it will lead to long term benefits for the country. Other intoxicants should also be prohibited along with alcohol so that those addicted to liquor do not find other replacements for their addiction.”
