Create a Special Fund to Pool Government, Corporate and Public Aid for People Hit by Lockdown, Jamaat tells State

Mumbai: With the unorganised labourers and daily wagers suffering due to the nationwide lockdown, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has asked the state government to create a special fund to pool the government resources, corporate aid and public donations meant to help these people.

In a letter to the state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, Rizwan-ur-Rahman Khan, President, JIH Maharashtra, has suggested initially the state can allocate money from its budget, while also appealing to industries to divert their corporate social responsibility (CSR) donations of the first quarter in the pool. “The state can also appeal to the general public to chip in according to the requirement, he suggested.

In its letter, which was submitted to the CM earlier this week, JIH proposed a series of measures aimed at reducing the pain of those hit the hardest by the lockdown imposed by the state and the Centre in the wake of Coronavirus Diseases (COVID-19) outbreak. The organisation asked the state to double the distribution of food grains and other essentials at the rationing shops in the state. It has also proposed that the state give the approximately 3.65 crore unorganised labourers in the state a monthly compensation of Rs. 5000, or provide them with free-of-cost food and shelter.

“Besides Social and health sectors, Financial Planning needs to be done for immediate relief to people and economic packages for organized and unorganized sectors,” read the letter given by JIH.

The organisation has already started a food distribution drive across the state, including the city. The volunteers associated with JIH and its student wing Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) are reaching out to those affected by the lockdown and offering them cooked food as well as food grains.

In addition to these measures, JIH demanded that additional testing laboratories and quarantine centres for COVID-19 suspects must be established in the cities that are most affected by the outbreak. The organisation also asked the government to issue an advisory to the housing societies to co-operate with the state and keep an eye on the COVID-19 suspected people that have been recommended for home quarantine.

“JIH Maharashtra is duty-bound to support Maha Vikas Aghadi Government in this time of crisis and will always support and cooperate for the benefit of the people in the state,” read the letter.
