Protesting farmers.

New Delhi, 28 Nov. 2020: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has condemned the crackdown on farmers’ protests near the bordering states of Delhi and called on the government to accede to the demands of the farmers by repealing the recently promulgated farm laws.

In a media statement, JIH Vice President Prof. Salim Engineer said: “The government should listen to the farmers and respect the rights of those protesting near the bordering states of Delhi. The use of water cannons, police barricades, lathi-charge and teargas on farmers, wanting to reach the national capital to press their legitimate demands was uncalled for. According to reports, the Delhi Police has requested the state government to convert 9 stadiums into make-shift jails to detain the protesting farmers. This approach will further alienate the farmer community and give credence to the impression that the government does not care about the welfare of the farmers and is not willing to negotiate or discuss their grievances.”

The JIH Vice President has said that the Jamaat earlier objected to the recently passed Acts related to the agriculture sector. “The Jamaat considers these acts as anti-farmer and against the spirit of Indian Constitution and that of a welfare state. These Acts would oppress the farmers and strengthen the corporates. The Jamaat had demanded to repeal these Acts. The government should have taken farmers in confidence before passing these Acts,” he added.

Prof. Salim Engineer called on the Government to respect the citizen’s right to peaceful protest, talk to leaders, listen to their demands, and make necessary amendments in these acts. He said, “the repressive measures to silence the voice of dissent would worsen the situation and weaken our democracy. It would tarnish the image of India. The protesters also need to be vigilant about the anti-movement elements who may conspire to make these protests violent.”
