Date: 10 Oct 2012

Discusses Illegal Arrests of Muslim Youths, Assam Violence, Communal Riots, Anti-Violence Bill

New Delhi, Oct 10: A high-level delegation of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind led by Ameer Jamaat Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari called on Hon’ble Union Minister for Home Affairs, Mr. Shushil Kumar Shinde here last evening. It discussed with Mr. Shinde some vital issues confronting the nation and the Muslims in India.

Other members of the delegation were Jamaat’s Secretaries Er. Muhammad Saleem, Muhammad Ahmad and Muhammad Shafi Madni (who is also in-charge of Jamaat’s ongoing relief and rehabilitation work in Assam).

Drawing the attention of Hon’ble Home Minister towards the chain of undue and illegal arrests of innocent Muslim youths, the Jamaat chief said that some Supreme Court verdicts have also underlined the fact that Muslim youths are being targeted only because they are Muslims. He added that this chain of illegal arrests has created a sense of fear and insecurity among the Muslims and strong resentment is developing against the Government, police and secret agencies. The Jamaat chief also made it clear to the Home Minister that due to this resentment the ruling party will have to pay a heavy cost in times to come.

Other issues that surfaced during the discussion included recent Assam violence, communal riots in Uttar Pradesh, and Anti-Violence Bill. The Jamaat leader also put before the Union Government certain demands like directing the police and other government agencies to keep in view the Apex Court guidelines before and during detention of a citizen, to desist from issuing irresponsible statements on arrests, and to contain communal violence instead of being mere spectators. He also demanded strict legal action against the police officers who are proved to have implicated innocents; grant of proper compensation to those who have been acquitted by courts of law and also to those who have suffered loss of lives and properties during communal riots; making proper arrangements to rehabilitate the displaced Assamese in their own places; reissuance of necessary documents to those whose houses and ID cards as well as documents related to properties were burnt during the Assam violence; taking measures to ensure that communal violence does not recur in the country; and passage of the Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill.

The JIH delegation also submitted a Memorandum to the Home Minister, detailing all these demands on the vital issues. The Home Minister read the Memorandum and listened to all these concerns with rapt attention and ensured the delegation to ask the concerned authorities to take action and change the situation for the better.
