“Palghar lyching – an inhuman hate crime”: Salim Engineer

April 21, 2020

New Delhi: The Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Prof Muhammad Salim Engineer has condemned the lynching incident in Palghar. In a statement to the media, the JIH Vice President said: “The mob lynching in Palghar district in Maharashtra has once again brought shame and ignominy to our society. We are ashamed of this inhuman hate crime and express our strong condemnation. This incident has exposed the fragile state of our law and order machinery. The guilty should be awarded strict punishment as soon as possible so that such incidents should not repeat. The incident is all the more regrettable as it happened in the presence of policemen.”

Prof Saim Engineer said: “The growing trend of violence in society has been fuelled by the political class to polarize society against a particular community. The government is indifferent to and has failed to prevent hate crimes against minorities and Dalits. The government did not punish the anti-national and anti-social elements who carried out these targetted killings. One of the main reasons why the culture of violence is overwhelming society is the political support and encouragement given to the perpetrators of violence by politicians. There should be concrete steps taken against this trend.”

The JIH Vice President continued: “The propensity among people for lawlessness and to disregard the law and order machinery is a matter of great concern. Some sections of media are being used by the vested political interests of a few to conduct a systematic hate campaign for dividing society. This hate first damages the minorities and then hits all sections of society. Maybe our society is moving in this direction and it is extremely dangerous. The government must punish such elements and stop this dangerous trend. Any delay in carrying the remedial steps shall have extremely damaging consequences.
