The Eid is celebrated to continue the tradition of sacrifice in the way of Allah, laid by Prophet Ibrahim. He conveyed the message of Tauheed to his people, with sound argument but they did not respond positively. Instead they threw him into a blazing furnace. Allah however saved him from harm. Their plot against Ibrahim failed. Ibrahim migrated from his native country Iraq to Syria.
Allah gave him a son in old age. He was Ismayeel, described as “forbearing”. Ibrahim saw in a dream that he was offering his son in sacrifice. Both fathers and son decided to follow Allah’s command, given in his dream. When the deed was about to be performed, Allah intervened and accepted instead the sacrifice of an animal. Their supreme act was Islam in its true sense, because Islam is nothing but complete obedience to Allah. Allah also blessed Ibrahim with another son Ishaq.
Eid Azha reminds Muslims that they should offer sacrifice in the way of Allah. They are Muslims only because they are ready to obey Allah’s commands, without any reservation. About animal sacrifice Allah says: “It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah. Rather, it is your piety that reaches Him” (Surah Haj: Verse 37)
