New Delhi, 06 Dec. 2021: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has expressed shock and concern over the civilian deaths in Nagaland.

In a media statement, JIH Vice President Prof. Mohammad Salim Engineer has expressed shock and concern over the deaths of more than 15 unarmed civilians and one Army personal in Tiru area near Oting Village, Mon District of Nagaland.

Media reports suggest that the Army mistakenly fired on a pick-up van carrying coal miners proceeding to their village Oting. The firing killed six of the miners. It is reported that later seven more civilians were killed when agitated villagers clashed with the armed forces. Many more civilians were also injured.

Mourning the loss of life and sharing the grief with their relatives and near ones, Prof. Salim hoped that the high level enquiry announced by the government would reveal the truth about the incident and would not spare anybody guilty of these killings.

Demanding reasonable compensation for the families of the deceased, the JIH Vice President said that the incident also showed the failure of our intelligence apparatus.  He maintained that it was very important for the Army to be extremely careful and sensitive while dealing with civilians in an area under their control for restoring or administering law and order.

Prof. Salim said that there should be strict compliance to the guidelines regarding dealing with civilians during some suspected activity. He hopes that such incidents are not repeated and justice is ensured to the bereaved families.
