Jamaat stands in solidarity with victims of anti-Christian Kandhamal riot

New Delhi, 26 August 2014: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is strongly standing in solidarity with the victims of Kandhamal riot, said Intizar Naeem, Assistant Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind while addressing a gathering of the victims and human rights activists here at Jantar Mantar on 25 August 2014. The Jamaat leader was accompanied by Inamur Rahman, an official of the Public Relations Department at Jamaat headquarters.

The program was jointly organised by several human rights groups, Christian bodies and women organisations on the occasion of 6th anniversary of the anti-Christian riot that occurred in Kandhamal district of Odisha on 25 August in 2008. Around 38 people were killed while thousands of people mostly Christians were displaced due to the riot orchestrated by Sangh Parivar outfits.

In his speech, Assistant Secretary of Jamaat Mr. Naeem also talked about the reason why riots like Gujarat and Kandhamal are happening at a regular interval in the country.

“Gujarat, Kandhamal, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Maliana will not stop. It will continue to happen as for the last 65 years the seed of hatred has been sown and now it has become a crop and people who sowed the seed are now harvesting this crop when and wherever they want,” said Mr. Naeem but he expressed hope for justice and an end to communal riots only if people got united to protect the Constitution which communal forces are hell bent to distort.

“But such kind of gathering at such occasions is a hint there is still hope. If we got united we can stop the menace of communal riots. We must get united to protect the Constitution which the communal forces are hell bent to distort and disfigure,” he said.

Other eminent personalities who spoke on the occasion included Dr. John Dayal, Sehba Farooqui, Naved Hamid, Vrinda Grover and Meenakshi Ganguli.

In his speech, Dr. John Dayal said: “Kandhamal should not happen again. If Hindus, Muslims and Christians showed unity Kandhamal would not happen again. But if they didn’t, they would be hit by a conspiracy again and riots like Kandhamal will happen again and again.”
