October 31, 2022

New Delhi, 31st Oct. 2022: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has expressed pain, concern and demanded judicial inquiry into Gujarat’s Morbi bridge collapse.

In a statement to the media, JIH Vice President, Prof Salim Engineer said, “We are extremely pained at the collapse of the Morbi Bridge in which more than 140 people lost their lives and around 200 people are still missing. We offer our condolences to the deceased and pray for a speedy recovery for the injured. Reports suggest the people, who are managing the bridge, have opened it four days ago without the required fitness certificate from the Morbi Municipality. The findings of the government-appointed probe into the tragedy must be made public and the guilty must be awarded exemplary punishment. All the government and non-government people found responsible for the tragedy shall severely be punished as per the law. The Gujarat government must ensure that there is no corruption or flouting of norms in any of its public works. The government must practice due diligence in securing the lives of pilgrims or devotees when they throng public places for their religious observances. The lives of citizens must never be compromised at any cost.”

Prof. Salim has also demanded adequate compensation for the grieving families.
