Jamaat-e-Islami Hind condemns ICC’s charges against Sudanese President and demands to withdraw

NEW DELHI: 17 July 2008

Mr Nusrat Ali, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) strongly condemned the war crime charges against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir as initiated by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The chief prosecutor of the ICC accused Bashir of “committing crimes against humanity” in the western Sudanese province of Darfur, which Sudan had categorically denied.

Expressing concern over the plan of ICC to prosecute President of Sudan, Secretary General of Jamaat said that the move would further hamper the peace and reconciliation efforts between Sudanese government and Darfur insurgents while the Sudanese government can establish peace and amity in this region if ‘foreign hands’ stop from aiding insurgents or igniting them.

Mr Nusrat Ali said, “it is very surprising that the ICC, which has shown utter silence when atrocities were being done in various parts of the world, mainly in the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan and now comes out with such a controversial issue that might make vulnerable the peace efforts in Sudan and the whole region as well. “It is a clear indication of double standards and it will not be helpful to enhance the efforts aiming at healing and reconciliation in the region,” he added.

Finally, he described the charges and the application for an arrest warrant against Bashir are unreasonable and unjust, and urged justice loving countries to force ICC to withdraw the ‘Charges’ against the ‘head’ of the ‘state’.
