New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the nation’s capital and other cities and reports of police brutality on protesters. The Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Muhammad Salim Engineer in a statement to the media said:
“Jamaat-e-Islami Hind expresses serious concern over the steadily deteriorating law and order situation in the nation’s capital. We have credible reports of clashes between pro and anti-CAA protesters in the Maujpur area of Northeast Delhi in which the Delhi Police was just a mute spectator in the face of pro-CAA protesters pelting stones and provoking others to resort to violence. There are also very disturbing reports of the Delhi Police brutally lathi-charging anti-CAA protesters who were taking out a peaceful march in Hauz Rani last night. Many women and girls have been seriously injured in the lathi-charge and the resulting stampede. Many protesters were admitted in various hospitals. Jamaat also condemns the ultimatum given by a BJP leader to the police saying: “Remove the anti-CAA protesters in Chand Bagh and Jafrabad within 3 days or else the people will not listen”. This is open provocation to violence and we condemn it. This same leader had previously taken out a rally in New Delhi and raised slogans of shooting traitors. Unfortunately, no action has been taken against the leader even as his latest provocation was made in the presence of a senior police officer. There are reports of violence even today.

We urge the government of India and the Delhi Police to ensure the safety and security of all citizens including those who are protesting against the CAA. The police must not act in a prejudiced manner and should not allow anybody to take the law in their own hands and threaten the citizens of India with open calls for violence. The right to dissent and protest against unjust laws and policies is a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution. The situation must be normalized before it goes out of control and the nation has to pay a very heavy price for the apathy and inaction of the authorities.”
