Jamaat successfully checked displacement of Muslims after recent violence in Assam Shafi Madani

New Delhi, 14 May 2014: Thanks to the hard efforts of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, the situation could be controlled immediately following the recent killings of Muslims in Assam and the fear that Muslims will again flee their homes was allayed, said Mohammad Shafi Madani, Secretary, Social Service, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind while speaking at the weekly Public Program here at Jamaat headquarters on Saturday (10 May 2014). He informed that Jamaat has been doing relief work in Bodo Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) for the last two years.

In his one-hour speech, Shafi Madani who had reached Assam within 24 hours of the violence in Baksa and Kokrajhar districts, elaborated on the incident and its background.

He said that in July 2012 also, Muslims were killed mercilessly by militant Bodos and around 4 lakh others were rendered homeless. In the last days of April and first week of May this year, Muslims were again attacked in two districts of Assam – 40 Muslims were killed and 75 homes were set afire.

He said the recent killings were related to the Lok Sabha election 2014. Majority of non-Bodos and Muslims voted for a non-Bodo Lok Sabha candidate this time. Bodo militants took revenge for this.

He also said that the violence started a day after the polling (24 April) but the police did not take any action. Rather the police themselves took part in the attacks on Muslims. Men, women, children were beaten up, their homes were ransacked. They took away three girls in the jungle and freed them after 2-3 hours.

He informed that a joint meeting of all Muslims organisations was held in Guwahati for relief and rehabilitation measures. The meeting was attended by Hafiz Abdur Rasheed (All India Muslim Majlise Mushawarat), Maulana Abdur Rasheed Qasmi (Jamiat Ulema), Mujtaba Farooq (Welfare Party of India), Inamuddin (Milli Council), Abdul Hameed (state president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind). He was also present in the meeting which decided to set up a fact finding committee to visit the affected areas and prepare a report. The report will be presented before the government and people.
