People must unite against fascism

New Delhi, Feb 17: Muhammad Salim Engineer the Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, has strongly condemned the recent attacks on the media and the students and faculty of JNU in the Patiala House Courts and termed it as a natural outcome of the politics of hate and violence expounded and practiced by those who believe in the ideology of fascism and are against the pluralistic ethos of this country.

The JIH Secretary General said that: ‘’It is a matter of grave concern that a sitting BJP MLA attacked a CPI minority cell in-charge in broad daylight and then had the audacity to declare to the media that he would have shot him if he had a gun. Another shameful attack took place when many reporters and media persons were threatened and manhandled by BJP sympathizers in the garb of lawyers inside the court. All this happened in the presence of policemen who remained mute spectators to the crude display of muscle power and intimidation.

The crackdown on the JNU campus along with these premeditated violent attacks with full support of the law and order machinery points out that the country is being sucked into the vortex of fascism and is entering a phase that is reminiscent of the dark days of the Emergency. It is absolutely essential for all those who support democracy and communal amity to unite and fight against these fascist forces. We cannot afford to be complacent as the very idea of our nation as a secular democratic and pluralistic republic is being challenged by fascist forces who want to deprive the minorities and oppressed classes of their fundamental rights and impose their narrow, communal and majoritarian agenda on the people of India. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind demands that the government take swift action against those guilty of carrying out these attacks and issue a stern warning to those who take the law in their own hands.
